Who and What is RMA

RMA stands for Rand Mutual Assurance. They provide cover to employees in the event of

injuries and accidents whilst on duty in the same way as the Workmen’s Compensation

Fund, but for specific classes and industries. These employers would fall under classes C,

D, and K which are the mining, and mining related industries. Sub-classes L are employers

who fall under iron, steel galvanising and metal industries.

Before registering at the RMA, employers must still be registered at the Compensation Fund

first before they will be transferred to be registered at the RMA. The rest of the processes

will remain the same. Each year, employers must submit their Return of Earnings to the

RMA. When they receive their assessment invoice, payment must be made. Once payment

is made and allocated, the RMA will issue the employer with a Letter of Good Standing

which will be valid for a year.

It is important to note that Rand Mutual Assurance operates under the Compensation for

Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA), which covers for work related injuries and

illnesses. They also administer claims for occupational injuries and diseases, ensuring that

employees receive the necessary support during challenging times.
